***7/30 update: still in love and they continue to impress me. Chopped up frozen vegetables with ease. Bread knife is best I've ever had. Cuts homemade bread in nice thin and even slices. Still look like new. Highly recommend!***6/28 update: I've had these for a couple weeks now, and I've added a star since these have met my expectations. After a quick sharpening, sliced through potatoes and tomatoes perfectly. Sliced nice and thin, then diced them up fine. And today I cut a pill in half with ease. I hope these last for a long time. But if they don't, I will be back to update my review again. *** To be fair, these were a warehouse buy. Just got them yesterday so this is just a first impression review, I cook 3x/day so I will be back to update after some real usage. I am not hard on my things, I take such good care of my stuff that I have things for 30 years...like the pricey Japanese knife set these are replacing. Let's see if these are up to that.Well packed with a nice gift card, but the base was filthy and had sticky sloppy glue on the knife handles, and so on initial unpacking I was very disappointed. However, with a good handwashing of knives and wipe down of the base, this set gleams beautifully. So can you gift these? Absolutely. Just check them over first before you do. And sign the cute card :)I attacked a watermelon as my first subject and the carving knife slid through the skin nicely. I won't say 'like buttah' because that's not true (well maybe cold butter). I still have a scar on my finger where I almost cut it off struggling through one of those with an old knife, and the difference is night & day. Then I used the utility knife to cut out the flesh (of the melon lol). Nice. I was able to hold up a piece in my fingers and draw through it to slice in half cleanly. Wow. All this prior to sharpening them myself. Looking forward to seeing what the rest will do, on homemade bread that's crusty on the outside yet soft in the middle, on meats, prepping veggies. I will report back. Many people say that but I always do.... good or bad!The base is heavy and sturdy, but don't plan on putting it under your cabinets, or storing it sideways... it's a trapezoid shape that was unexpected, but gives it a nice flair. The knives are a nice weight, not real heavy but not thin and wimpy - just perfect. The chef knife does balance on the finger like the seller's pic shows, I have not tried the others. Handles are smooth at the rivets and tang; they fit nicely in my average size female hands. Copper is gorgeous and appears to be a nice thick plating. I can't imagine what the bent knife in another review was subjected to...I don't see that happening under normal kitchen usage. Perhaps they're married to my ex-husband and he tried to use it to open a stuck paint can.Lastly, for the love of all that's holy, people - don't put your knives in the dishwasher!! Treat them like babies and hand wash them gently and dry them with a soft towel - preferably immediately after using. And if you get rust spots, use Barkeepers Friend. Rust on prep knives will happen if they have carbon content, this is not a failure of the knife but is indicative of the user's care. Or lack thereof. Sorry, the truth hurts ;)This review is my own, I didn't get paid nor get anything for free. I take the time to do this to repay those that have done the same. Sorry about the pics being sideways, they were right side up but when I uploaded to my review they got turned that way :(
